Pie postulatio voluntatis (Order of St. John of Jerusalem - Hospitallers Papal Bull)
PLEASE NOTE**** You must choose either the English or Latin Version.
Here we offer our replica of Pie postulatio voluntatis (Latin "The Most Pious Request), the Papal Bull issued by Pope Paschal II on February 15, 1113 which formally recognized the Knights Hospitaller and confirmed the Order's independence and sovereignty. The Bull was similar to that of Innocent II's Bull (Omne Datum Optimum) which established the Knights Templar and which we offer under a separate listing. The document measures approximately 17" wide and 24" long and is joined by a strip of parchment and is printed in Latin and in English. Upon ordering, you will receive one copy in either English or Latin for the price listed.
Of course ours is not an exact replica but heralds the original in its choice of fonts and symbolism. Of particular note, we have added the attributed Coat of Arms of Paschal II to the bottom. The original probably would have not had this addition and the arms of this particular Pope may have been created at a later date. We have attached a photo above showing the Popes engraving with the Coat of Arms displayed. Careful scrutiny of the arms shows diagonal lines through the colored bands which based on the Petra Sancta method (1638) indicates purple bars on an argent field. If you would not prefer to have this on the document, just let us know and we will remove it. In addition, to the strip at the bottom which holds the bulla or seal of the Pope, we have added two cross pattées, which was an early form of the Hospitaller cross as seen within the Krak de Chevaliers, the Syrian castle of the Hospitallers (1144 - 1271). As far as we know, this is not on the original although the bottom strip on the original is severely torn. As before, if you do not wish this addition, just let us know. These additions have been added for color and artistic diversity for a document that might otherwise appear somewhat bland.
The bulla, which originally would have been crafted of lead authenticated the final document but due to weight, probably was easily torn from the document. We have made ours of faux gray/silver wax. The seal measures approx. Approx. 50 mm across and hangs from a natural fiber cord. As these are hand-stamped, please allow for variance.
The document will be rolled and secured by black textured paper cuffs with a cross embellishment. As the box to ship these in is large, do be aware that you may be required to pick up at your local Post Office. If your carrier normally drops off packages, do be mindful of inclement weather.
Please note that this sale is for one copies of Pie postulatio voluntatis, either in Latin or in English. All other items in photograph are for photographic prop purposes only and are not for sale. Historical prints/photos are added for customer information concerning the original document. This document is printed on slightly aged looking parchment. Please note that parchment will often wrinkle naturally. If you would prefer your document more wrinkled to reflect age, let us know. Thanks for looking!
